Katosi Women Development Trust is an organziation of 11 women's groups in southern Mukono district of Uganda. The grassroots organization formed out of the interest of women wanting to improve their own economic and developmental status. The organization's projects include agricultural development and education, water and sanitation, and microfinance.

Cow husbandry has been one of the most successful projects of KWDT. Cows are owned by the trust and cared for by members who then benefit from milk production. Because most women have limited land, women raise their animals through a zero grazing practice, hauling in food and water from other locations. The women then pass on the first female calf to another member. KWDT currently maintains 83 cows and 42 calves. We are currently hoping to increase the number of cows by 33 as just over 50% of members have access to this extremely profitable endeavor.

Cow ownership can increase a woman's monthly income 100%. Most rural Ugandan women work primarly in the agricultural sector, selling fruits and vegetables on the local market. Most live on less than a dollar a day. Through the sale of milk women are able to improve their standard of living, having money to pay children's school fees, build on to their homes or expand on other economic endeavors. Many women also choose to sell their morning milk and keep their evening milk for their family's own consumption enhancing their children's nutrition.

Donations for this project will go directly to the purchase of cows, increasing the number of members with heifters by 33. These women will in turn pass on its offspring, doubling and eventually tripling or quadrupling the impact of your gift. Thank you for your consideration.

The cows at Katosi Women Development Trust are producing! Through education and support members are trained to know when their cows are in heat. New generations of cows means more milk and more income for the women and their families.

I visited Katosi in April and stayed with some of the women. They are extremely proud of their cows and take wonderful care of each one. I was treated just like family. Each women is trying to better their lives and the future of their children which is hard to do in rural Uganda but these women have been able to move foward.
