Background Information:
SENSE is a registered civil society, relentlessly working among the rural people of Thiruppuvanam block in Sivagangai district in the state of Tamilnadu. This organisation is very well known to and accepted by the various communities living in this area. Since 1994, SENSE is working for the upliftment of the down trodden community in the district of Sivagangai which is backward in nature. The SENSE organisation actively led by Mr. M. Selvaraj, who is the Founder and Secretary of SENSE and the majority members in the organisation are women.
Vision: “SENSE envisages rural stake holders to attain quality life through improved health status, literacy, legal protection, economic development and it aims at overall holistic life for the rural mass”.
Mission: “To work among and through rural people particularly women, children, disabled and disadvantaged community to promote community action by way of organizing, educating and training and thus to bring about improved and sustainable health status, literacy, legal protection and economic development.”

Project Title: Support to Render quality education to rural poor children
1. Demographics:
Based on our ASER survey of India, the literacy ratio of Sivagangai district is 60% but in primary level that is 1st standard to 5th standard 70% of school going children are unable read their own mother tong without any difficulties, the 80% of the school going children are unable to do simple addition and subtraction in mathematics and from 6th standard to 8th standard school going children are unable read simple word in English, Tamil, additions, subtraction and divisions in Mathematics and basic sciences.
We have selected 10 villages in Thiruppuvanam block, 1 village will have two centres that is for primary level centre and 6-8 standard another level.
The communities are in mixed group many children are 1st generation school goers and their occupation is coolie work in agriculture, construction works, nearby biscuit company, Chemical factory and brick chambers. Their daily wages for men two hundred and hundred for women, but this income is not an assured income because for the last three years we did not get regular monsoon rain due to that reason the agricultural labour work did not support their livelihood, so there their income is in an uncertain position.
2. Problem:
In our long experience and observations of our education system, there is very long gap between rich children’s education and poor children’s education, as you know the opportunities, for the rich children get at the age of 3 but the rural poor children do not get in their education career. The rich children learns to operate computer system in their home and they are taught in the schools also, so they are more frequent in operating computer system from the age of 3 and above where as the rural poor children get this operating computer system culture only at the age of 15 and above, in some families it is still in later age. So there are more disparities in getting exposure in all the ways of their life, like knowledge wise, speaking in English, practical wise, economic wise, life quality wise and in many others. But on one day both the children meet in one place to go for interview to get the job, only there, the poor children feel their lost chances of good education. Here we want to stress one thing that getting good marks is not that the child has good knowledge in all the way because the higher rank holder or higher marks scorer just by hearts the lessens and vomits as answer as per the question asked in the examination, it does not mean he/she has understood every subject and got good scoring in his/her education. This is the fault of our education system.
We want to educate the children in the way to understand and study not just by heart the lessons, presently only this practice is going on in our community. We want to concentrate children from 1 to 8th standard in the subjects of Tamil, English, Mathematics and Science. From our ASER survey we found that 60% of children do not know how to read and write correct Tamil, which is their mother tong, 70% of the primary children do not know simple addition and subtraction and 80% of the children do not know simple words in English and 70% of the upper primary do not know multiplication, fraction, integers, science. Hence apart from their school education we plan to train them in Tamil, English, Mathematics and Science in different way, in the way easily understood by the children. Our ultimate aim is to transform the rural children to compete with the urban/rich children in knowledge wise. We propose to give opportunities to rural downtrodden children.
From our observation the Anganwadis are physically present and the children are given nutritious food as per government directions to the staff. But in many Anganwadi centres the nutritious food pocket sold out by the staff and that too with the support of the higher officer. Another important issue is that, Anganwadi center teacher will not be available to teach the children at the centre, most of the time the Anganwadi teacher staff will be utilsed for various government’s statistics purpose or for any other government office work purpose, so the children do not get the education learning facility from their early childhood, always only the Aya/cook will be available. Hence the children do not get interest and fear in education and it leads to early drop out from the school.
As said above the regular education scheme does not allow concentrating on weaker children of the slow learners, more over it is not designed for quality education but a state wide one uniform scheme of education is implemented . In order to concentrate on the slow learners we plan to conduct after school evening education centres after the school time. We can get special education materials for this purpose. Al ready we have done a pilot project study in the mentioned villages with the support of Eureka child foundation, Chennai, but they are willing to support with education materials only. The primary classes children entry level admitted are slowly become dropout children and because of this reason the higher education going children ratio is very lesser while comparing the primary level admission. The rural children are unable to compete with the urban school children in education. But this after school tuition center will support the children from the drop outs because the input of the tuition trainings is scheduled in such a manner.
3. Approach:
We have different methods to teach the slow learners to pick up easily and learn as fast as the other children and our ultimate aim is to create strong foundation to the rural children in education.
*In each subject Tamil, English, Mathematics and Science we have trained teachers; they are trained in our educational materials.
* Our ultimate aim is to render quality education to the slow learners to create hope and without any bias he will learn we can bring the expected result of good education with in him/her
* We have method of single word reading, multiple words reading, storytelling, using flash cards, matching the correct sentence in the mixed words, singing rhymes both in Tamil and English, identifying colours, animals, In mathematics addition, in single digit to five digit, subtraction from single digit to five digit, multiplication, divisions and introduction to basic science, orbit, biodiversity and others.
The activities are planned as each child will have special concentration, using flash cards, test in reading and writing and speaking storytelling, solo rhyme singing and group rhyme singing. It will not be a mere tuition centre but it will be more of a learning centre.
We are going to conduct 1 primary level and 1 secondary level totally 2 centers in a village, with this plan we select 10 villages, so totally 20 centres.

4. Effectiveness:
A pilot project study was done based on this proposed project from February 2014 to April 2014 with the support of Eureka children foundation in the name of Eureka Superkidz programme. The admitted children was conducted reading and writing tests as we mentioned in the above methods but 17 children out of 24 were not able to read single word or joint word without any difficulty that is in Tamil which is their mother tong, the same result was in mathematics and in English. But after our 3 months intervention we were able to get progress 4 children in reading Tamil, 2 children in English and 4 children in Mathematics. Since this was a pilot study we were able to make such changes but if it was a full term (12 months) we might have got some more positive changes. Hence this method of education brings more effectiveness in reading, writing and in understanding of our education. Hence we came to the decision of implementing the same methodology in improving the education of slow learners. 5. Alternatives:
After school tuition usually takes place everywhere to the school going children by the school teachers and in private tuition centers but the thing is in the tuition centers they do their school home works only, nothing is done to improve the quality of education of slow learners. We are aiming to improve the slow learners’ quality of education, that is why we discarded the mere tuition idea and we have proposed to conduct Eureka Superkidz programme. More over this idea of education has given good result in our pilot project period. We are proposing to implement the programme in rural areas not in urban areas, so we feel this project will bring good result among the rural children.



6. Outcomes:
a. Admitted slow learners will start adopting the new method of education and will show improvements in their schools.
b. At the end of 2nd year the result of this project will inspire the parents by seeing their children’s’ education and this will motivate the parents to pay some amount of tuition fees for their children in future and this will lead to the sustainability of the programme.
c. The children will confidently face other urban children in any competition, because they will acquire basic knowledge through our after school tuition centers.
d. By this unique project there will not be any more school drop outs.

7. Metrics:
We have monthly improvement chart through that chart every month we plan for monthly education schedule, as per the schedule the project coordinator visits each center and examines the weaker children with the support of the teacher whether he/she has got the ability to read or work in mathematics without any hurdle for example if a slow learner boy has problem in reading one sentence of 4 words, he is passed only he got the ability to read the sentence without any hurdle, if he is failed he will have to go the learning process until he completes the task. So by the monthly chart any one can quantify the effective improvement of the slow learner’s children.

8. Long Term Impact:
As we mentioned above, our long term goal is to prepare the rural poor and downtrodden children to compete with urban/rich children in all the ways of their education and in getting job and to create confidence/hope in their education which leads to future life settlement through getting good education. As short term goal is to prove his/her efficiency in their school education in the school exam, the way of presenting any school activity, because we do not just educate only in school education, we plan to bring out their hidden talents like acting, dancing and singing in other extracurricular activities which the urban/rich children get from their early age hood and importantly through this type of coaching the children will come out of fear in education and will get interest in education and school drop outs will be eradicated and these are all immediate and micro effects.
9. Highlights:
The project is unique because the children will not learn/study from any regular school materials; we will provide them separate education materials to improve their confidence in quality education, so they will not do their school home works in our center. This project is intended to improve the quality of education and confidence among rural children and through this type of coaching children’s hidden talents, extracurricular talents will come out and in that area also they will be trained.
10. Capacity for Success:
Our organization has the capacity to bring success in this proposed project because it was proved in our pilot project period (3 months) to the Eureka Child Foundation.
11. Scale:
Yes this project is scalable by the improvement in quality education among rural children; it can be verified in the quality education centers itself by checking the skill charts of the children’s education in their academic efficiency.
12. Sustainability:
We cannot convince the rural people unless we prove the effectiveness and the better result of their children’s education, once they are convinced we can ask them to pay tuition fees for the teachers. For the teachers we can get tuition fees from the parents from 3rd year but for the project coordinators and other administrative expense we need continuous support
