Our cozy little library at Secondary is, in the truest sense, a labor of love.
The endeavor to make the space warm and inviting was initially daunting. The room was bare, dark and permanently frigid.
At that time, it was another parent and me, chipping away bit by bit. We were knee-deep in dust, dirt and boxes of donated books, many of which were either moldy or not suitable.
Every book that remained, we digitally processed. Those that needed trigger-warnings were labeled before being shelved. Meanwhile, we sought out funds for furniture and books.
You may not be aware that the library is upheld and maintained by parents, both in time and financial donation. Our ability to buy books, host art workshops, and take students on outings is only possible through your contribution.
I am asking you, our BBS community, to consider making a donation to this little corner of the world, where I have tried to make students feel safe and seen and heard.
We love talking about books, but our conversations go above and beyond what we’re reading. Many of them know that they don’t need to be readers to feel welcome in the library. Amidst their daily dramas, I listen and hold space because I respect them for who they are AND where they are in their lives.
If the walls of the library could speak, they’d tell you of shared laughter and tears, the endless debates, and our collective love of iced coffee.
