The nearly half century-old South African National Youth Orchestra is the top youth orchestra in the country inspiring young musicians to play from their hearts and share their joy with audiences across the country and the globe.
It was started by music teachers in 1964 and has become one of South Africa's most successful non-profit music institutions. Our staff consist mainly of volunteers, and young musicians between the ages of 13 -25 come from across the country to meet at our orchestra courses to form four orchestras including the South African National Youth Orchestra.
We make it possible for all young and talented South African musicians to attend our programmes regardless of financial or geographical barriers.
This year the National Youth Orchestra consists of 80 musicians from all over South Africa and represents all of our country's diverse communities. They form one orchestra and one family as the youth orchestra creates a place where all of us feel at home.
The musicians are given expert tuition and guidance from some of South Africa's and the world's best teachers and performers and they gain invaluable skills to help them develop not only as musicians but as people.
We would like to share our music with South Africa and the world, and your donation will be put to the best possible use in youth development through music. We would like to perform on 29 November in Johannesburg before embarking on an international tour to Mexico in December 2009. This will enable intercultural dialogue and create opportunities for us to share our methodology and culture with Mexico and vice versa.
We appreciate any donation, no matter how small, and the funds will go directly to helping us provide performance opportunities, and share the beauty of South African orchestral music with the world. Let a child play!
