Project ‘RefeeDock’
Many of you have seen photographs of refugee boats arriving on the shores of the island of Lesvos, and of volunteers taking out children and people from these boats.
However, during these actions a great majority of the refugees get their clothes and shoes wet in the sea. Moreover we have repeatedly witnessed a number of cases of serious leg fractures with people jumping off the boats into the sea full of rocks and stones.
During the summer months wet clothes and shoes are not much of a problem. During winter however, with sea temperature of only 14°C, air temperature of 5°C and wind speed of 70 kmph, the conditions are very uncomfortable and people in wet clothes and shoes are much more likely to develop hypothermia, which can occur after just 30 minutes.
It is precisely for these reasons that we came up with the idea to disembark the refugees onto a solid dry surface to avoid the danger of fractures and hypothermia. We could easily realize this by building a mobile and floating dock (wharf).
With our modest means and from scraps collected from the sea and the island, and in cooperation with the local people from the village of Petra (Lesvos) we built our dock in November.
During December our team made up of people from Greece, Czech Republic, Germany, Syria and Croatia (12 members who do not belong to any NGOs and have been providing aid to refugees from July 2015 along the so-called Balkan route) received 5 wooden boats and 8 rubber dinghies from which we disembarked around 600 people with the aid of the dock (wharf),.
While disembarking no cases of injuries were reported and all refugees stepped onto Greek soil with dry clothes and shoes. All these events happened during the nights and on weekends when there is a big shortage of volunteers on Lesvos beaches.
Unfortunately, the dock was destroyed in a storm because it was not made of sturdy material.
Realizing that the dock is an ideal solution we decided to continue with even greater resolve in carrying out this project. We presented our idea to several NGOs, who agreed we have a great idea but did not provide any financial assistance or other help for reasons unknown to us.
In the previous weeks we established contact with project experts in engineering who helped us complete all calculations and drawings and also the sketches and list of materials needed for the construction of the dock (wharf).
We are planning to construct the dock in a local workshop belonging to our member from the village of Petra(Lesvos), who seeks no compensation for his work or tools. We want to inform about this project because for the realization we are seeking funding for the needed material. All tools, transport and work on construction of the dock are donated by the team members.
