    Post-harvest food security
Over 70 % of the Ugandan population is employed in the agricultural sector. Uganda’s economy depends on agriculture that contributes to over 70 % of Uganda’s export earnings. Agricultural output primarily comes from about 3 million small scale farmers who own an average farmland of 6 acre or less. These farmers often struggle to buy good seeds or build good stores to keep their harvest save. Maize is important for the diet of the population; it accounts approximately for 50% of caloric intake. At least 70% of maize seeds are sourced from the prior year’s harvest. Most maize grain storages in East Africa are open-air storage facilities. This allows re-wetting and related pest activities, resulting in damage to stored maize. Post-harvest maize losses have serious consequences for the farmers, their income and their food security.

About "Umoja produce and marketing group"
The farmer group “Umoja produce and marketing group”, located in Munkunyu, Kasese, western Uganda is slowly growing and gaining strength. However they also face the problem of storage facilities to the extent that they must fear losing big parts of their maize harvest.

The group produces and bulkes grains, especially maize, beans and g-nuts for better future price. One of our challenges is the lack of storage facilities. We request for any support and thank our donors.
