Neues zu Mikas Krankheitsbild

Wir möchten euch auf den aktuellen Stand setzen, was Mikas gesundheitliche Lage und die Planungen der Operation angeht.

Im Laufe des vergangenen Jahres hat sich der Verdacht erhärtet, dass Mika neben der instabilen Halswirbelsäule auch am sogenannten Tethered Cord Syndrome leidet. „Tethered Cord“ heißt übersetzt „angeheftetes Rückenmark“ und bedeutet, dass das Rückenmark mit dem Gewebe der Umgebung verwachsen ist. In Mikas Fall handelt es sich um Occult (verstecktes) Tethered Cord Syndrome, das sehr schwer zu diagnostizieren ist, weil es bei MRT-Scans nicht sichtbar ist.

Die Klinik wird die Diagnose nach Mikas Ankunft überprüfen und plant nun Mikas Behandlung in zwei Schritten: Bei einem ersten Eingriff soll das festgewachsene Rückenmark gelöst werden. Zwei bis drei Wochen später soll bei einem zweiten Eingriff die lang geplante Operation an der Halswirbelsäule stattfinden.

Was bedeutet das Tethered Cord Syndrome?

Dadurch, dass das untere Ende des Rückenmarks nicht wie normalerweise im Wirbelkanal frei beweglich, sondern festgewachsen ist, wird das Mark gestrafft und übt auch Zug auf den Hirnstamm aus. Dies könnte bei Mika – in Zusammenhang mit Mikas Bindegewebserkrankung — auch die Ursache dafür sein, dass die Halswirbel instabil geworden sind, weil der Körper versucht dem Druck nachzugeben und diese lebenswichtigen inneren Strukturen zu schützen.

Das Tethered Cord führt zu Verformungen, Schmerzen und Taubheitsgefühlen in den Beinen und Füßen und zu verschiedensten Störungen des Stoffwechsels, der Blutgefäße und des Nervensystems, da das Rückenmark unter der Spannung immer weniger Blut und Sauerstoff bekommt und als Reaktion auf kleine Körperbewegungen im Grunde genommen "ausfällt" (Ischämie).

Aufgrund von Mikas Symptomatik geht die Klinik in Barcelona davon aus, dass bei Mika das Occult Tethered Cord Syndrome vorliegt. Die Klinik wird nach Mikas Ankunft besondere Tests u.a. mittels elektrischem Strom und AI-gestützter Scans durchführen, um eine endgültige Diagnose zu stellen. Bei dem Eingriff wird das Rückenmark von dem umgebenden Gewebe getrennt und eine stabilisierende Vorrichtung in die Wirbelsäule eingesetzt.

Leider ist Mikas Krankenversicherung auch bei diesem Eingriff nicht bereit, die Kosten zu übernehmen und hat bestätigt, dass Mika die OP nicht über das NHS - das staatliche Gesundheitssystem in UK - bekommen kann. Wir sind also weiterhin auf eure Solidarität angewiesen, um Mika den Zugang zu der dringend nötigen medizinischen Behandlungen zu ermöglichen!

We would like to update you on Mika's health situation and the plans for the operation.

In the course of the past year, it has become clear that Mika very likely suffers from Tethered Cord Syndrome in addition to the Craniocervical Instability. "Tethered Cord" means that the spinal cord is attached to the surrounding tissue. In Mika's case, it is Occult (hidden) Tethered Cord Syndrome, which is very difficult to diagnose because it is not visible on MRI scans.

The clinic will verify the diagnosis after Mika's arrival and is now planning Mika's treatment in two steps: The first procedure is to release the tethered spinal cord. Two to three weeks later, the long-planned surgery on the cervical spine will take place in a second procedure.

What does Tethered Cord Syndrome mean?

Because the lower end of the spinal cord is not free to move in the spinal canal, as is normally the case, but is fixed, the cord exerts traction on the brain stem. In Mika's case - in connection with Mika's connective tissue disease - this could also be the reason why the cervical vertebrae have become unstable, because the body tries to give in to the pressure and protect these vital internal structures.

The tethered cord leads to deformities, pain and numbness in the legs and feet and to all kinds of metabolic, vascular and nervous system havoc as the cord becomes progressively starved of blood and oxygen under the tension and essentially "strokes out" (ischaemia) in response to minor body movements.

Based on Mika's symptoms, the clinic in Barcelona believes that Mika has Occult Tethered Cord Syndrome. The clinic will carry out special tests, including electric current and AI-assisted scans, after Mika's arrival to make a definitive diagnosis. The procedure involves separating the spinal cord from the surrounding tissue and inserting a stabilising device into the spine.

Unfortunately, Mika's health insurance is also unwilling to cover the costs of this procedure and has confirmed that Mika will not be able to get the surgery through the NHS - the state health system in the UK. So we are once again depending on your solidarity to help Mika access the medical treatment they desperately need!
