About us
In 1988, we at Salaam Baalak Trust began to discover the world of street and working children in and around New Delhi Railway Station - the harsh, raw underbelly of the city. And yet it was a life they had chosen, in preference to a home and family that had become entirely intolerable. There was so much missing from their lives - food, security, health, love, education. And a place to play and to dream.
All children must dream, of better days, of happier times. It is this chance that we aim to provide. It now operates 14 centres - contact points for children who live on the street; full time shelter homes for those who are being rehabilitated, plus an emergency helpline and mobile schools in slum areas..
Sometimes, we can make dreams come true. Simple dreams - of warmth on a winter's night; of freshly cooked food; someone to dress a wound. And less simple ones - an education, a job; above all a future to call your own.
