What is the problem?
The central Kazakhstan steppe is the natural habitat for a wide variety of ungulates, birds, reptiles and insects. One of the key-, or rather umbrellaspecies are the kulans, the Asiatic wild asses. As one of the largest native mammals, they play an important role in the steppe ecosystem. They roam vast areas, dispersing seeds from isolated plant communities, and fertilizing otherwise barren grasslands.
However, poaching and habitat conversion eradicated them from the steppe around 1930.

What do we want to change?
We want to bring the kulans back to the central Kazakh steppe. A new, stable population is to be established here.

How do we achieve this?
We resettle selected animals from South Kazakhstan to the Central Steppe. Due to lack of roads in this area, the wild asses have been transported by helicopter so far. In the future, we plan to conduct overland transport, as a connecting road is scheduled for completion in 2023.
In order to build a base for stable population, about 30-50 individuals need to be relocated.

Who is "we"?
"We" are Frankfurt Zoological Society (ZGF), which is part of the "Altyn Dala Conservation Initiative" (ADCI) since 2005. Other project partners are Flora and Fauna International (FFI), the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB), the Department of Forestry and Wildlife of the Ministry of Environment of Kazakhstan, and the Association for the Conservation of Biodiversity of Kazakhstan (ACBK), which implements ADCI's actions in the field. ADCI's goal is to reconstruct the complete and intact ecosystem of the Central Steppe, including its large herbivores: saiga antelopes, kulans, and wild horses. The saiga population has now stabilized thanks to a newly established network of protected areas the size of Switzerland. As one of ten outstanding conservation projects worldwide, ADCI received the Global Conservation Flagship award by the UN in 2022. https://altyndala.org/

Where is the project at right now?
Currently, there are 6 kulans in the reintroduction enclosure and another stallion in the surrounding steppe. More animals are absolutely necessary for the future of our project.

With your donation you support not only the preservation of a single species but the stabilization of the entire steppe ecosystem. 100% of your donation will go to the project. Thank you very much! :)
