About this project
A large proportion of the population in this part of the world suffers unnecessarily due to a lack of adequate healthcare. Chronic diarrhoea, especially among children, grossly hinders the lives of those affected. The key cause of this poor hygiene is the lack of sufficient sanitation facilities. The majority have access only to cesspits, which in the rainy season become the source of dangerous infectious diseases.
BASECHIS aims to:
Minimise this danger of infection through the construction of toilets which are hygienic, ecological, sustainable and suited to their rural surroundings. In conjunction with provision of the physical toilet, those involved receive comprehensive hygiene education.
Who runs BASECHIS?
BASECHIS is run by a team of 7 individuals who originate from Mexico, France and Germany. The Mexican members are from rural communities and were trained as construction leaders by BASECHIS in 2011.
How does BASECHIS work?
The main objective of BASECHIS is the dissemination of practical knowledge of correct hygienic practice when dealing with the issue of human excrement. In accordance with this aim, since its establishment in mid-2011 BASECHIS has supported 25 families in the construction of hygienic compost toilets.
Those receiving the support are always actively involved in the construction of the toilet. This means that in the future they will be able to build compost toilets independently, and also to pass on their expertise to others.
The construction of the toilet is carried out under the guidance of a BASECHIS construction supervisor. Hygiene training and appropriate follow-up support is also provided. In addition, BASECHIS imparts technical advice for users and all interested.
How is BASECHIS funded?
BASECHIS is funded exclusively through private donations. We do not receive any support from public sources or charity trusts. As such, all toilets are funded by “Toilet Sponsorship” schemes, carried out by private individuals or groups.
How much does a compost toilet cost?
The total cost for a standard toilet is approximately 220 Euros (£180, $290). This includes the material costs, transport, labour and administration costs, as well as a solidarity fund for especially impoverished families.
