Several earthquakes shook the southern turkish border region on February 6, 2023. The earthquakes have damaged many houses, roads and infrastructure, in a region where millions of civil war refugees have sought shelter. Many of the refugees in the affected areas already live in dire conditions. Now they have been hit by yet another disaster. Rescue efforts are ongoing, and the number of victims is rising rapidly.
Millions of people already relied on aid before the catastrophe
Millions of people in the affected regions are already dependent on aid: Many are starving, and there is a shortage of drinking water, electricity and heating fuel. Temperatures are currently close to freezing, and there is snow in many regions.
Welthungerhilfe's Emergency Coordinator Jesco Weickert is currently in the affected region. He reports:
"Particularly those builidings that had already been damaged or become unstable after 12 years of civil war have collapsed. It is suspected that many more victims will be found under the rubble. Hospitals have appealed for blood donations. Aftershocks shake the region again and again, and therefore many people are staying outside in the cold and sleet because they are afraid to return to their homes."

People need urgent support now
