Children are ... curious, inquisitive, playful, open to others, open to each other...
Children are our future!
In the refugee camp on the island of Lesbos, the children find it particularly difficult to follow their natural urge to play and learn. And it is enormous!
There is hardly any space to play in the containers or wooden boxes in huge tents.
No rest at all to learn. Far too few offers anyway.
There is no kindergarten or playground in the camp, and school lessons are rudimentary.
Very few trees provide hardly any shade. Only the sea invites you to swim.
If the fear of death can be overcome.
This play-learning project takes children out of the camp and offers them the chance to meet local children in a protected setting.
Refugee children and local children meet each other and have positive experiences together.
Together in small groups, we can learn everything worth knowing about our beautiful planet Earth.
And how we can all contribute to protecting this earth and making it healthy.
So that our children have a future worth living. A future that is as healthy as possible.
Videos and games deepen understanding.
Experience has shown that children bring what they have learned home with them and “educate” their family members to also implement sensible behavior.
Of course, our 3 translators also learn along!
For the camp children and their families, the implementation options are more limited.
But even there, garbage can be separated and plastic bags can at least be used repeatedly.
What the “EcoKids” learn in our project they find in their target countries in one way or another.
The demand from children is huge. Most people want to come several times a week. Currently - November 2023 - our finances are only enough for 3 learning groups per week. We have the 'little ones' aged 6-8, the 9-11 year old newcomers with little knowledge of English and the 'old hands' who come from the beginning and have a good knowledge of English.
And 1 or 2 trips per quarter - the kids would love to have them weekly! During the excursions you can get to know nature better, enjoy it and learn a lot about it.
The children want more. Parents want more - and ask for certificates of participation for their children. We want more. With your help this will be possible.
The program is supervised by our Greek environmental educator, who has already gained a lot of experience in local schools.
