About this project

CUCOMO from Cultural Cooperation Mozambique e.V. is responsible for this project
 Problem to solve:
"Millions of girls in Africa possess little or no knowledge about menstruation when they get their first period. A lack of adequate information about this normal biological process breeds fear and shame. It puts girls’ health at risk and negatively affects their education, as many girls miss school during their menstruation, or drop out completely when they reach puberty." [WASH United]

What we want to do:
1) Build a program and network of local mentors to foster awareness on sexual reproductive health, menstruation and menstrual hygiene management (MHM)
2) Secure continuous provision of re-usable period products, particularly in rural communities

What we want to achieve:
  • Foster self-confidence and knowledge in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH), MHM and Sexual Reproductive Health
    • By providing educative workshops and re-usable period products
  • Create local jobs for financial empowerment
    • Through hiring of a local CUCOMO project manager, mentors, and production of period products
  • Ensure long-lasting impact
    • By training teachers on MHM education, gathering feedback and creating partnerships

Key Pillars of Phase 1 (mid-2024):
1) Hire our first CUCOMO employee in Maputo as CUCOMO Program Manager (yeah!)

2) Develop a MHM Education Program
  • Educational Material (workshops, posters, videos, ...)
  • MHM Mentor Manual (step-by-step guide to facilitate educational workshops)
3) Create a Network of Local Mentors + Collaborators
  • Collaborate with professionals from healthcare, education, …  to ensure all education and supply is effectively delivered
4) Purchase re-usable Period Kits
  • 2x Period Panties, 1x Period Pad
Milestone until Jan 2024: Run Pilot at 2 schools (one in Maputo, one in Banhine) with 400 girls, gather feedback, improve as we go
Objective until June 2024: Reach 2.000 girls and secure their continuous access to re-usable period products

Key Pillars of Phase 2 (until end 2024)
1) Build a Fully Equipped Solar Bus to
  • deliver educational workshops and period products via roadshow, with a focus on remote villages
2) Set up a Community Center in Maputo to
  • serve as operational HQ
  • provide a variety of activities to the public (culture, education, sports, ...)
  • have room to produce re-usable period products + soap
Objective until end-2024:
  • Reach 5.000 girls and secure their continuous access to re-usable period products
  • Empower local CUCOMO supporters financially
