About this project

Jaci Meinhold from Living Gaia e.V. is responsible for this project
Brazil is one of the most dangerous countries in the world for climate activists. Indigenous women have taken on a strong role in the fight for nature. To organise their struggle, the Huni Kuin women meet once a year for a large assembly. There they have the opportunity to exchange views on the challenges, discuss solutions and plan courses of action.

Organising the meeting is a major logistical effort. The villages are often many hours away from each other by boat. We support the Huni Kuin women in realising this important meeting.

The first meeting in 2023 was a great success. Almost all of the 40 villages along the 3 rivers in the region were represented. In total, almost 300 women were present, much more than expected. The meeting is particularly important for young women to consolidate their identity and share their dreams for the future.

Important topics of the meeting are
 - The protection of the forest
- Supply of clean drinking water
 - Women's health, birth centres and support for midwives,
 - Infrastructure: community centres, schools, solar boats, etc.
 - Better training for village teachers
 - The fight against drug trafficking/consumption in indigenous areas
 - Recognising traditional teachers and masters
 - Safeguarding tradition and culture

The strategies from the meeting will then be implemented together with Living Gaia e. V. and local NGOs.

Help the indigenous women in their fight! The assembly supports them in gaining a stronger voice and defending their rights.
