A rising number of people can hardly spare money for enough and healthy food if we wouldn't be saving excess food. To expand this and redistribute more food, we started this fundraising.

We're saving food that is still edible but no longer vendible and would be wasted usually. Therefore, we collect fruits, vegetables and more from farms, supermarkets and central markets and offer them at our zero-waste shop in Dortmund (Rheinische Straße 24). The special: for all the saved food the "pay what you want" principle is applied, everybody pays what they can spare or what they want to pay. By now, we often can't save half of the excess food because the car (an Opel Corsa...) is too small. A larger car allows us to save and redistribute considerably more food.
Lately, a rising number of customers make use of the saved pay-what-you-want food. They depend on us saving food. We all experienced the increasing prices within the last years, and most affected are the poorest of the poor. Regarding this, it's even more unbelievable how tons of food still go to waste and at the same time students, retirees, single parents and many more gratefully receive this food.
But what about the food banks? Isn't it the same thing? Yes and no, because many food banks can't admit new people anymore, there are bureaucratic obstacles and the opening hours don't match with everyone's free time. At our zero-waste shop, it's way easier: no certificate is needed, it's not that stigmatized and you can easily meet new people and have a conversation. Our opening hours (2-7 pm) are complementing those of the food banks, so people have access to saved food even if other facilities are closed.
At the moment, the small car is definitely a bottleneck. To continue and expand our activity, we need a larger car. With a delivery van, new sources and scales come into consideration for food saving. Last but not least, our activity becomes more flexible and independent which is quite important.
