About this project

Prof. Dr. Florian Kluge, Dekan from Alanus Hochschule gGmbH is responsible for this project
Architecture students at Alanus University in Alfter are building a work and thinking lab - new premises for studying, teaching and dialogue.
Until now, the Atelier of the Department of Architecture alone has played a central role in the teaching programme and the interaction between teachers and students as a place for working together, learning and teaching, meeting and exchanging ideas. In the meantime, the department has grown to such an extent that space in the Atelierhaus is becoming scarce and new rooms need to be created:

The Student's Work- and ThinkLAB! An ensemble of containers with wooden decks, a (roof) terrace and a greenhouse as the "crowning glory" on the first floor. A large number of ideas have already been collected for the flexible space on offer: Model-making workshop, thinking lab, quiet workroom, room for joint digital lectures, meeting rooms, "telephone booth" for video conferences, photo lab, support tables, master room, materials storage, break terrace and much more.
In a multi-phase concept
  •  the workshop facilities are to be expanded and modernised,
  • the new container rooms will be developed, planned, expanded and filled with life by the students,
  • space will be freed up for further student workstations and
  • a (construction) material depot will be created, which will provide the space to pay more attention to the topic of circular economy and material reuse and to use the material for 1:1 projects.
The students design their own learning landscape! Construction, remodelling and extension can be integrated into modules of the faculty as personal contributions and are thus part of the course as well as the joint development of the space and team. In addition, the reuse of building materials for the conversion and extension plays an exemplary didactic role and creates valuable experience for the students.

One shipping container and nine office containers have already been purchased. The transport and installation of the containers, the preparation of the site and the installation of connections (electrics) have already been financially secured. Our supporters so far are:
  • Engelen Bauunternehmung, Herzogenrath
  • Deubner Baumaschinen, Aachen
  • Findeisen Foundation for Art and Building Culture, Britta and Ulrich Findeisen, Cologne
  • BOMA Greenhouse, Alfter
Baukultur NRW
... so that there will be many more...!

Because: there is still a lack of funds for the further expansion of the work and thinking lab!

For the further expansion of the container landscape and "Beletage", we would like to receive funding commitments for:
  • Terraces, steel stairs, railings, wooden decks, installations and conversions
  • Interior fittings for the work and thinking lab (floor, walls, furniture, technology, connections etc.), paddling pool and garden furniture...
Support us - we would be delighted to have any supporters!
