About this project

M. Bulaty from Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin is responsible for this project
A treasury for the future
The Späth Arboretum is a Noah's Ark of rare plant individuals and cultivars as well as an object and experimental laboratory for research into the ecological challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.

Botanical garden, landscape park, museum, place of learning, living and recreational space
The Späth Arboretum is a botanical garden. It provides plant material for research and academic teaching and is involved in nature conservation, environmental education and science communication.
As a living museum of botany, it is open to the urban community and offers programmes for people of all ages and educational backgrounds.
In addition, the arboretum in the urban environment offers both a recreational area for citizens and an important refuge for rare animals, plants and fungi, thus contributing to species conservation.

Späth-Arboretum der HU – the green jewel
For over 140 years, the Späth Arboretum has been home to a unique collection of trees and shrubs with over 1,000 rare species and varieties, including 130 unique champion trees. It was created by Franz Späth, the owner of the world's largest "Ludwig Späth tree nursery" around 1900, and the Berlin city garden director Gustav Meyer as a sophisticated show and experimental garden in the style of an English landscape park.

In 1961, the Humboldt-Universität developed the Späth-Arboretum into a botanical garden. Over 4,000 scientifically documented plant species currently grow on an area of 3.5 hectares. Over 20,000 botanical objects (dried and pressed plants, fruits and seeds, pollen, lichens and mosses) are preserved in the herbarium. The collections of the arboretum are scientifically supervised by the Institute of Biology of the HU.

Today, the arboretum is a green jewel that invites visitors to relax and is also used for biodiversity education and university research and teaching.
