About this project

Thijs Valkenburg from Vita Nativa - Nature Conservation is responsible for this project
Bio-Ilhas aims to protect birds breeding in saltpans that face significant pressure. Through the Bio-Ilhas project, we have created several islands to provide birds with a safe place to nest. Additionally, we collaborate with schools to educate students about the bird species inhabiting the saltpans and the importance of nature conservation. By raising awareness and offering safe nesting sites, we strive to ensure the survival and thriving of these bird populations amid increasing environmental pressures. This multifaceted approach helps secure a future for these vulnerable species in their natural habitats.

Since 2024, we have created 10 small islands in the salt flats, providing a safe haven for threatened bird species. We are especially proud of the Little Tern (Sternula albifrons), with an average of 35 breeding pairs nesting on our islands each year – that's 80% of the total breeding population in the surrounding area!

During the breeding season, we protect the nests with electric fences, safeguarding over 60 nests annually from predators. Each nest saved is a step toward preserving this endangered species. But our work doesn't stop there.

Our visitor trail, which attracts more than 1,500 nature lovers each year, offers engaging insights into our conservation efforts and the unique species that thrive on our islands.

Your donation directly supports the protection of these vital habitats and helps us continue our crucial conservation work. Together, we can ensure that the Little Tern has a safe place to nest for generations to come.
