Hardly any other instrument inspires people across all age groups, educational backgrounds, income levels or nationalities as much as the guitar. In 2018, GitarreHamburg started a project that enables children in Billstedt to learn guitar free of charge from professional music teachers. The institutions Kultur Palast Hamburg, which are firmly anchored in the district, as well as the Am Schleemer Park school and the St. Paulus school, have been won over as cooperation partners. The project, which was launched as the "Bündnis für Bildung Billstedt" as part of the "Kultur macht stark" funding program, has since been consolidated under the title "Gitarre Billstedt" and even produced a thirty-member junior orchestra for the JugendGitarrenOrchester Hamburg in 2020 with the JGOH-Juniorteam Ost. In 2022, 13 children from the project became winners of the Jugend musiziert competition for the first time. With the "Gitarrentage in Billstedt" and other concerts, the guitar orchestra now enriches the cultural life of the district with an unprecedented facet.
In order to enable participation in the Gitarre Billstedt Project as low-threshold as possible, there are no financial costs for the beginner courses. Lessons are free of charge and the guitars and accessories are also provided rent-free.
For participation in the JGOH Juniorteam Ost and the associated individual or small group lessons (45 minutes per week), only a monthly fee of 15.00 euros per person is charged. If necessary, this contribution can be financed entirely through the Hamburg Education Package.
Gitarre Billstedt does not receive any regular funding from the public sector. For each project year, therefore, funding must always be obtained from foundations and other institutions at great expense so that the project can continue.
