Fambul Tik, in collaboration with its Sierra Leonean partner, Youth in Action for Development (YAD), constructed the Konjo Community Market and Social Mobilization Center a few years ago with support from philanthropists in Germany. The project is a story building with a market, conflict resolution center, solar mechanized water well, toilets, youth office, and administrative office. The centre is electrified with 15 kW solar panels. This project has been the main energy source for the community of 8000 inhabitants and surrounding villages. The solar mechanized water well provided about 5000 litres of safe drinking water daily. This is the only gathering place where the whole community can watch world news and football games via a subscribed satellite service. It is also the only place they can organize their birthdays, weddings, funerals, and workshops to learn about human rights, especially the rights of women and children. Additionally, it is the only place where they mediate and resolve conflicts without police involvement or settlement fees. This is the only place where they conduct correspondence with NGOs and government departments to seek help. Most importantly, the refrigerator, where the Perephral Health Unit (PHU) reserves medical products for the entire community, was stored in this facility due to its reliable electricity.
Unfortunately, the facility lost power supply in August this year after thunder lightning struck it during a heavy downpour. According to technicians, the solar inverters and charge controllers, which cost 5600 Euros, must be entirely replaced. We kindly request support from anyone who could help us repair this facility so that the community can regain the use of this essential structure.
