A decent home for families in Peru: support the construction of emergency shelters!
The South American country of Peru faces numerous challenges such as political unrest, severe social inequality and a deficient health and education system. According to the World Bank (2022), 27.5% of the Peruvian population live in poverty. This poverty is particularly evident in the precarious living conditions on the outskirts of large cities, such as in the Cerro Verde community in San Juan de Miraflores near Lima, where informal settlements are emerging. There is a lack of safe housing, stable infrastructure and adequate access to basic services such as drinking water, sanitation and electricity.
The lack of affordable and adequate housing has serious consequences, manifesting and exacerbating the severe inequality that already exists and thereby limiting opportunities. According to Article 25 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights and other international agreements, everyone has the right to adequate housing. But for many families in Peru, this right remains unfulfilled.
TECHO Peru has been working since 2006 to make this right a reality. Together with volunteers and the affected families, the organization has already implemented over 5,000 emergency shelters and more than 100 projects in 240 communities. These emergency shelters, also known as Viviendas de Emergencia, offer a quick and effective solution: they are made of robust, weatherproof materials and are built together with the families.
The plan is to finance 4 emergency shelters together with local schools and with the financial support of a foundation. Our share and therefore the donation target for this year's winter campaign is at least €3000!
The fundraising campaign will run until the end of February 2025 and the project will be implemented shortly after the end of the campaign.
