    About this project

    L. Hefermehl-Poluda from Doktor Omnibus Deutschland e.V. is responsible for this project
The "Clinique Mobile Maisha" is a non-profit, non-government organisation in the DR Congo led by Professor Dieudonné Sengeyi of the Department of Gynecology at the University Hospital Kinshasa. In the suburban areas of Kinshasa, public health services are extremely limited, contributing to rapid population growth, persistent poverty and, for women and teenage girls, a frightful risk of dying in childbirth. Through mobile reproductive health care clinics the "Clinique Mobile Maisha" brings free gynecological and general medical aid directly to the women and children most in need. We believe that reproductive health care is a right, not a privilege. For thousands of women and children in DRC, this is not the case. In the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where very few women have access to prenatal care, 13 mothers die for every 1,000 births (UNICEF). A majority of the women have never practised family planning before and only 21% of women in DRC is currently using contraception. In addition, the urban slum communities are highly vulnerable to HIV infection due to socio-economic, demographic, cultural and behavioural factors. As the suburban communities in Kinshasa comprise many internally discplaced people from Eastern DRC, many of our beneficiaries are survivors of sexual violence during the years of conflict. The stigma surrounding sexual violence is strong and prevents many women from seeking care in public hospitals. Our mobile clinic team of nurses and doctors provides a range of reproductive health services, information and counselling for adults and adolescents 12 and older—including family planning, prenatal care, treatment of sexually transmitted infections and education on HIV/AIDS prevention. In addition, the clinic offers the possibility of observation and treatment in its small hospital with the possibility of transportation to a larger institution for operations – all free of charge.
