Infection prevention for the world's poorest people.
- Our hands play a central role in the spread of pathogens such as bacteria and viruses. They are the main route of transmission for up to 80 percent of all infections. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hand sanitisation with alcohol-based hand rub is the single most important measure for the prevention of infectious diseases.
- However, especially in poorer regions of the world, people still do not have access to adequate hand sanitizers due to the high cost of production. Washing hands with soap as the only form of hand hygiene is not a good alternative to alcohol-based hand sanitizers due to lack of clean drinking water and skin intolerance.
- Our CLEAN HANDS project has the vision to change this and, with the support of the Clinic Partnerships funding programme, has been producing alcohol-based hand sanitiser in a sustainable and cost-effective way at Zomba Central Hospital in Malawi, one of the poorest countries in Africa, since 2023. It also provides the hospital with disinfectant dispensers and organises hygiene and hand disinfection training for hospital staff.
