AI-Powered Water Rescue: Faster, Safer, and More Efficient Operations

DLRG Bezirk Frankfurt am Main e.V.
A project from DLRG Bezirk Frankfurt am Main e.V. in Frankfurt am Main, Germany
DLRG Frankfurt am Main e.V. has been saving lives for decades. To improve water rescue, we’ll use AI-assisted sonar and an underwater drone to scan in real time and locate missing persons faster. Help us deploy these life-saving systems by summer 25!

About this project

Philipp Hericks from DLRG Bezirk Frankfurt am Main e.V. is responsible for this project
The DLRG Frankfurt am Main e.V. has been committed to saving lives and promoting water safety for decades. Our volunteer rescue teams are actively involved in various operations across different bodies of water. We are primarily called to water rescues on the Main and Nidda rivers, as well as to various lakes beyond Frankfurt’s city limits. With the increasing frequency of extreme weather events and the challenges they bring, we must continuously evolve and integrate the latest technologies into our work.

Traditional methods for searching for missing persons in water quickly reach their limits in large, complex bodies of water. Time is the biggest drawback of conventional side-scan sonar, as the entire water surface must be systematically searched. Our innovative solution addresses this issue: A combination of AI-assisted search and rescue sonar with an underwater drone allows us to scan bodies of water in real time, quickly locate potential persons, and initiate rescues. Both systems are planned to be operational by summer 2025!

AquaEye by Vodasafe: This is a portable underwater detection system that combines advanced sonar technology with artificial intelligence to identify people underwater. Within less than five minutes, this device can scan an area of 8,000 m². Even in poor visibility conditions and dense vegetation, the AquaEye system delivers reliable results.

Chasing M2 S Underwater Drone: Equipped with a high-resolution camera and a precise navigation system, the drone enables us to explore hard-to-reach or hazardous areas. It transmits real-time live images to the operations command, allowing for better situational assessment and targeted rescue measures.

Key advantages of combining both devices:
- Faster rescue operations: By using state-of-the-art technology, we will be able to locate missing persons more quickly, especially in complex or deep waters.
- Increased safety: The precision and efficiency of AI-assisted systems reduce risks for our rescue teams while improving the success rate of search missions.
- Efficiency: Search times are significantly reduced, allowing our rescue teams to focus more on training and preparedness.

DLRG Frankfurt am Main e.V. is funded solely through donations and membership fees. Together, we can make a significant contribution to improving water safety and helping people in need quickly and efficiently. Every contribution counts—whether financial or by sharing this project!
