Weltweit sind ca. 130 Mio. Mädchen und Frauen beschnitten. Diese Zahl steigt jedes Jahr um ca. 3 Mio. Die betroffenen Mädchen sind in der Regel 4 – 14 Jahre alt aber auch Säuglinge und erwachsene Frauen sind Opfer dieses Rituals. Die Tradition wird in 28 Ländern Afrikas ausgeführt, beispielsweise in Ägypten und Äthiopien liegt die Quote bei mindestens 90 %.
