Hello!
In January, 2015, I will be teaching in Kabul, Afghanistan for two weeks at the Afghanistan National Institute of Music (ANIM), as part of their Winter Festival. (http://www.afghanistannationalinstituteofmusic.org)
***My goal is to be able to donate an oboe there, so that I can start training another young musician to be an oboist!***
I am Demetrios Karamintzas, a Greek-American oboist now living in Berlin. (www.facebook.com/dkoboe or www.dkoboe.com) Ever since 2004, I have been teaching music in the West Bank and Gaza, and along with the Barenboim-Said Foundation and the Edward Said National Conservatory of Palestine helped to create the first ever Palestinian Youth Orchestra.
Any money collected above the cost of a good student oboe, which I will purchase from Frank & Meyer in Berlin, will be spent on reed making tools. Not only will I make as many oboe reeds as possible for the students there (oboe reeds are handmade, very difficult to make, very fragile, and have a short life span), but I will put together a tool-kit for an 18-year-old student at the ANIM who I will start teaching to make reeds himself.
***I will show pictures of all the equipment I purchase, as well as receipts!***
Now don’t worry—the students will be in good hands even when I am back in Europe. In Afghanistan there is a wonderful, talented, courageous woman named Allegra Boggess, who does it all: She studied piano performance, teaches piano, oboe, and bassoon, and works in the administration of the ANIM. I will be there to give her all the support I can, hopefully not just in these two weeks, but also in future visits.
Thank you very much for your support! Please don't forget to share--even if you can't make a donation yourself!
Oboists out there: If any of you would like to donate any materials—especially staples, small diameter gouged cane, or even a shaper tip you don’t use anymore—please don’t hesitate to write to me, and I can give you my address in Berlin where you can send it before I fly there on 5th of January, 2015!
Special thanks to:

Naaman Wagner, pianist
Sankt-Johannis-Kirche, Berlin
My mother, Wendy McCarthy, for her unending support
