About this project

The Bangka Conservation Fund (BCF) urgently needs your support to save Bangka Island from illegal mining that is threatening to destroy the fragile eco-system, traditional livelihoods and tourism. A mining company has bribed its way onto the island and bullied the local people and its preparations are moving at an alarming rate.
Although the Indonesian Supreme Court cancelled the exploration permit the company was granted, recently then Indonesian Minister For Energy And Minerals, Jero Wacik, now under investigation for corruption, issued the company a production license! The island is under serious threat, unless we manage to have this license cancelled, too. Any support that you can give us in terms of advice, finance or support is greatly appreciated.
Under Indonesian law, Bangka Island is too small to be mined and needs to be protected. Yet some high government officials have been supporting the mining plans by giving permits out and even the local police have been supporting this venture, chasing locals off their land and cutting their water supply to make them move into ready made container boxes outside their village as the company wants to turn this into an industrial mining harbor site.
Bangka Island is situated in North Sulawesi, Indonesia, in the middle of the Coral Triangle, which has the highest recorded biodiversity on the planet. It has 3 main villages with about 3.000 people as well as five small scuba diving resorts who provide work opportunities, help the local community and increase environmental awareness through educational projects at the local schools. The island is home to tarsiers, cuscus, an incredible array of marine species and local fishing communities.
We are a small coalition of people who are trying to raise funds to prevent this from happening:
— The money that we raise goes towards legal action against the mining company and the officials who are giving out permits.
— It also pays the transportations costs of villagers to Jakarta to represent their views, and towards helping the villagers on Bangka to put their case forward.
It is a huge battle against a company that has billions of rupiah to spend on this project so to fight them we need a lot more financial support. Please see the Bangka case timeline – green button below [About the carrier of this project].
The finance that we are looking for is around 35.000 Euros over the six months to come.
Our aim is to raise awareness of this issue and to protect Bangka Island against this huge threat. Please help us in any way you can, you can contact us on: bangkaconservation@gmail.com
