About this project

It creates access to clean, independent solar energy for seven Indigenous peoples (Kofan, Siona, Secoya, Waorani in the Amazon, and Bribri, Cabecar, Embera in Mesoamerica), facilitating their regenerative and self-determined development. Indigenous peoples are the best guardians of nature; strengthening them also means protecting their territories and the last natural resources and standing forests of our planet.
IMAGINE LIGHT TRANSFORMS LIVES.
The solar program brings clean and safe energy to rainforest communities, enabling important empowerment opportunities in the areas of:
- HEALTH (by replacing dangerous, expensive and polluting kerosene lamps and candles and refrigerating medicines and food),
- EDUCATION (by lighting after dark, children can do their homework, learn, play and develop their potential),
- COMMUNICATION & PROTECTION (through the use of electrical devices such as cell phones, computers, GPS, communities can report emergencies, for example, and demarcate and protect their territories),
- INCOME (by extending working hours before sunrise and after sunset, important income-generating activities are strengthened),
- EMPOWERMENT (by training Indigenous solar technicians and empowering especially women's organizations on fair trade of their handicrafts and regenerative agroforestry),
- ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION (indigenous peoples are the best custodians of forests and biodiversity; supporting them also means protecting their homeland, culture and nature in a sustainable way).
The remote rainforest areas where we work with Indigenous organizations are particularly hard affected by the climate crisis and environmental degradation. The northeastern Amazon in Ecuador has been devastated by one of the worst man-made environmental disasters. Since the 1960s, oil and mining corporations have been destroying and polluting the territories of Indigenous peoples through crude oil spills and highly toxic wastewater that poison rivers, forests and people. Monoculture farming of products such as palm oil in the Amazon and bananas and cacao or cattle ranching in Mesoamerica also pose massive degradation and threats to their cultural and physical survival, as well as to the stability of the climate, global water cycles, and our Planet's ecosystems.
JOIN OUR MISSION.
Our Regional Solar Initiative sustainably strengthens Indigenous Peoples in their self-determined movements for the survival of their culture and the protection of their territories through the culturally and gender-sensitive use of innovative technologies and the holistic building of local capacities, competencies and regional infrastructure.
