SALEM Uganda is an NGO providing medical care and community support for the people of the Nakaloke District (population 45,000) in Eastern Uganda. Salem Uganda is partly financed through donations by Salem International in Germany. The rest of the funds are raised through income generating projects, such as arts and crafts studios, a guesthouse and a conference/training centre. We want to invest in an enduring future, starting with life-saving mosquito nets...
Salem Uganda has been operating since the 1980s and is now recognised as a village in it's own right. Salem employs around 80 staff, most of whom live on site with their families. There are so many challenges facing the communities around Salem - failing crops, environmental change, poverty, lack of health care are some of the most important. Salem Uganda runs a respected health centre, nutritional clinic and maternity unit. People come from all around to be seen by our medical staff. Our childrens home cares for abandonded babies, street children and AIDS orphans, the Salem nursery ensures they get a good start in their education while our social workers support the communities to enable them to take their children back home. Our tailoring school offers local people the chance to learn a skill that can lift them out of grinding poverty.
Our environment team are working hard with local communities and schools promoting treeplanting and responsible land management. We also grow medicinal herbs and teach people how to use them.
The donations through betterplace will enable us to buy the equipment we need to keep our programmes running, to ensure the best care for our children and patients and to create a sustainable future for this vibrant community. Thank you for considering us for your donations.
