About this project

When I ask people in Uganda what they wish for to make life in their town easier, the answer would always be “water” or “rain”. The lack of water is not just a problem for the agriculture but also for people themselves. In fact they have rainy seasons between March and May as well as between August and November but during the dry season there is no water at all.
Considering this situation I feel like an idiot when I think about being bugged when the internet is not working here or they don’t have my favorite flavor of yoghurt in the supermarket or I have to wait weeks to get my new phone. How secondary are our problems.
Especially at the end of the dry season I noticed how important the water supply is. The rain was expected wishfully by the 500 inhabitants in the village. The old fountains in and around Nandere which are, by the way, over thirty years old are broken or used up. Once we even had to order water because the 25.000 tank of water was used up. Normally it’s filled with rain water. 6.000 liters of water costs around 40 €. That sounds not much to you but for the people in Uganda it’s a lot of money. They earn about 100 € a month (!!!).
After only a few weeks the 6.000 liters of water were already used up. To save money we bought some cans, borrowed a van from a friend and called all the men and kids to get some water for the people. We got lucky at an old and dirty billabong.
The result: 2 hours of work, 7 people in service and only 540 liters of water.
A solution was needed.
When I was still in Uganda we met some engineerings and got some offerings from three fountain builders down there. We now have the plan but we need your help.
We have to drill in 300 meters of distance of Nandere because the town is placed on a small hill. Down here the fountain is going to be placed at the bottom of the hill. The fountain is going to be provided with a hand pump and an electric pump. The hand pump is for the water drawing on location and the electric pump is going to put the water directly to the village. The water is provided to supply two schools, one hospital, one women’s club and the manse.
What is going to be build:
- Fountain in 300 meter distance from the village with a hand pump and an electric pump
- Pipeline to the village
Total costs: 6.514,14 €
