In India, women still have very restricted rights. Having their own occupation is often unthinkable. Supporting those women with learning a paid job with wich they can fully support their family, can dramatically improve their opportunities and independence. The fight for women's rights has also begun in India. It is a long way.
And with this, we come to my project: my assistance in the Auroville Village Action Group, AVAG for short. In co-operation with the association Auroville International Deutschland e.V., I am going to support a Women Empowerment project as a volunteer in the South of India. The project has several subsections: one is a tailor shop and embroidery where business start-up is made possible through training women in this field. This endeavour is also supported through the allocation of small loans and through marketing.
Another important area are self-help groups, in which women can exchange matters such as their views and situations. The third area that is emphasized by the project is joint development between the villages, breeching the barriers of the caste system. Men are also included in this process to broaden their view but also to give them development chances. Self-confidence arises ; own bases of existence develop. The issue of the limiting castes which keeps many Indian women and men in poverty and reduces their possiblities for development is a focus of the AVAG, as well.
I will have the opportunity, to participate in all areas and hope for your support in this important work!
At this point, I would like to tell you something about myself: I am 23 years old and finished my bachelor's degree in Psychology in the Netherlands last year. Currently, I am doing internships to decide which field I would like to work in later. Before I start my masters degree, I really want to use my abilities in a charitable project.
As a volunteer, I work for board and lodging. Costs for the flight, for the inssurance, preparation seminaries and the financing of the project itself arise. Three quarter of those costs are covered by incentives from the Federal Ministry for Economic Co-Operation and Development (BMZ) as part of the voluntary service „weltwärts“ ("worldward"). I am required to build a circle of supporters together with AVI-D for the rest of the costs.
I, and You with me, can be a part of India's women working for a higher self-esteem and more quality of life.
And guess what: Each and every donation that you place, is getting quadrupled by the BMZ! Donations can also be deducted from your annual taxes.
