Spix's Macaw – a species' return from extinction!

The blue Spix's macaw gained international attention through the Hollywood movie Rio, with the last two Spix's macaws in the lead roles. Unfortunately in real life, the species is already extinct in the wild since the year 2000. Today, only around 100 birds exist in captivity, making the Spix's macaw the rarest parrot in the world.

Together with the Brazilian Government, ACTP e.V. engages in the protection of this beautiful bird and its reintroduction into the wild. Our organization is an official partner of the Brazilian government and a member of the Spix's recovery program.

The aim of our efforts is the reintroduction of the Spix's macaws into the wild by 2021. To achieve this goal, we still have a long and difficult road ahead. Our work focuses on two main areas:

1) In our parrot breeding facility in the Schöneiche in Germany we are working on breeding the Spix's macaws with the aim to create a sufficiently large population for the reintroduction into the wild.

2) Together with our Brazilian partner ICMBio, we are working on protecting the original habitat of the Spix's macaws, as a basis for the reintroduction (e.g. through the acquisition of land and education of the local population).
