    About this project

    M. Renner from Raumgeschichten e.V. is responsible for this project
The Nkɔsoɔ House - Improving Earthen Housing Construction in Rural Ghana!

Our project, the Nkɔsoɔ House (which means "growth"), is a earthen construction case study house to be built in the Ashanti Region of Ghana. Using an international building workshop as a format, we will bring people from around the world to work together with local community members to learn from each other and to construct a sturdy, earth and climate friendly home to showcase the grandeur of earthen construction.

How did the project come about?

The Nkɔsoɔ House started as a submission to an architectural design competition offered by our partner organization, the Nka Foundation to "reinvent the African Mud Hut." The Ashanti Region has a long history of using earth for construction, but this tradition is getting lost due to misconceptions of the material and lack of skilled tradesmen. RAUMGESCHICHTEN e.V.'s response to the competition focuses on demonstrating earth's forgotten potential: to contrast the stigma of earth as a building material meant for the poor, and to bring dignity back to ecological, vernacular design.

What do we hope to accomplish?

    - Economically, our building uses locally found, affordable building materials and easily transferable, low-tech construction techniques, which enables the local community to improve their own living standards without huge financial investments.
    - Ecologically, our project embodies a model building constructed out of local, natural, and renewable materials. By optimizing the building layout for the climatic context, it creates a comfortable living environment without having to resort to costly, energy consuming technologies.
    - Socially, our house translates traditional building techniques into contemporary architecture giving people dignity and vision, by elevating the status of earthen construction.

What is our workshop all about?

During the month of August 2015, we will work with international participants and local villagers to construct our case study house using rammed earth and adobe construction techniques, and only locally found materials. Our hope is to stimulate the local construction and the local economy by building a replicable model home, as a method of capacity building for the community.

    How can you help?

Although we, at RAUMGESCHICHTEN e.V., are volunteering our time and expertise, we still need help to cover the costs of certain materials and local labor. Your contribution will help us buy the highest quality construction materials available from local vendors and to provide financial support for local laborers and tradesmen. Indirectly, you will be supporting the local economy, helping to train laborers in alternative construction techniques, improving housing, and promoting environmentally friendly construction.
