Why we do what we do?

Like the often called father of South Africa, Nelson Mandela, we believe that only personal contact can reduce stereotypes, prejudices and discrimination. This is the way to create "a real rainbow nation" that he was longing for. However in South Africa most people of different backgrounds are still living separated and have prejudices about the so constructed "other".

Our goal is to overcome prejudices and lower racism by enabling personal contact between young people from different backgrounds. Through our projects, we have realized that teenagers want and can make a difference!

How do we want to achieve what we dream of?

To reach this goal, we started our initiative "Bridges Camp".

We organize camps where teenagers from different backgrounds come together for 6 days. At the camp, we create a positive atmosphere outside their daily environment that allows them to overcome their prejudice and become more tolerant.

    How does it work?

The camp consists of leisure activities (e.g. sports, treasure hunt), discussion groups and exercises that help the teenagers to become aware of stereotypes; prejudices and to reduce them. The programme is based on psychological theories and was scientifically evaluated. Each game or acitivity support the teenagers to grow together as one group. The exercises also help to increase their self-esteem so that they can have a positive impact in their community. At the end of the week, the teenagers are prepared to return home and implement everything that they have learned in their everyday life and spread respect in their community.

We have so far organized five successful camps and always observed how the teenagers change throughout the week and find real friends.

How do we support our teenagers?

We see the teenagers as young adults rather than kids and believe that the teenagers should take responsibility for what they learn at the camp and have an impact in their community. We have seen that many of them have a huge potential to grow up as future multipliers and we want to guide them on this way. This is why we choose some of the teenagers at every camp to come with us on the next camp as facilitators. They receive a special training and with our assistance they teach the new participants and help us with several duties at the camp.
