    About this project

    K. Hennes from Liter of Light - Netherlands is responsible for this project
Liter of Light Netherlands is part of a global network of Liter of Light chapters that install solar bottles to provide a cheap source of light for underprivileged households in developing countries. The technology of a solar bottle was developed at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and was first implemented in the Philippines in 2009. The idea of illuminating homes through solar bottles spread quickly around the globe especially in rural areas and when natural disasters took place. The different versions of the lights are very easy and quick to build. Most of the solutions are recycled PET bottles filled with water and bleach, which simply diffuse the light through the roof of a shelter. It functions like a deck prism: during daytime the water inside the bottle refracts sunlight, delivering about as much light as a 40–60 watt incandescent bulb to the interior. A properly installed solar bottle can last up to 5 years. Other ones are more advanced and feature a solar panel on top of the bottle, so that the sun's energy is captured by means of a battery throughout the day. The LED inside the bottle uses that energy and can be switched on when it gets dark.

Liter of Light Netherlands is the first initiative of this kind in the Netherlands and is located in Maastricht. This student-based organization will conduct a 3-week project in Douroula, Burkina Faso, in summer 2016. During these weeks, the area of Douroula will be illuminated by teaching the locals how to both build and repair the solar lights. The ultimate goal is to offer continuous support with workshops on how to teach even more people about the construction of the lights.
The volunteers behind the Liter of Light movement believe in the power of light and how much help and joy it can bring to children, elderly and families. It doesn't only help children to do their homework in the evening, people even use them to build up businesses in remote areas and to thus develop their countries.
