About this project

The 12th January 2010 will go down as one of the worst days in the history of Haiti: A severe earthquake destroyed large parts of the capital Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas. About 220,000 people died, more than 1.3 million are homeless.
In this project CARE assists children living in temporary shelters. The aim is to enable the children to get new zest for life as soon as possible - even though some of them lost parents and brothers and sisters.
Due to the large number of affected children not everyone can get access to a trauma specialist. Therefore, CARE sensitizes community members, including parents, for the special needs of emotionally damaged children and adolescents. Through games and sport they are supported to incorporate their experience. In addition CARE distributes packages with materials such as balls and pencils. These toys help young Haitians to forget about the terrible events of January 12th at least temporarily and gives them the ability to easily return to just being a child.
Beside that adults learn how to recognize particular traumas and send the children to trained psychologists. Special attention will be given to girls who are often victims of sexual abuse. To boost the local economy CARE buys most of these relief items on site.
