    About this project

Anna Z. from Dream Africa Care Foundation is responsible for this project
The so-called „Future First Academy“ is a school and a daycare center for children that is located in Agbogbloshie, Jamestown.
Agbogbloshie is a slum in Ghana, near Accra. The school was founded in 2006 at the initiative of an elderly lady from the north of Ghana who is generally known as “Grandma”.
In the hope of better job perspectives, more and more women of Grandmom’s home area left for Accra in order to start a better life. Unfortunately, most of them could not afford a decent place to leave and had to sleep in front of their shops, between market stands or right on the streets. Their obvious helplessness attracted some men who abused and often raped them. As a result, many children were born into surroundings suffering from a total lack of resources to take care of them. The mothers had to take the babies with them to work and could neither nourish them properly nor provide them with a decent education. Grandmom wanted to support those women and their children, so she decided to found the Future First Academy where children should be taken care of and taught basic reading/writing and calculating skills.

Nowadays, the Academy consists of a kindergarden, a preschool and an elementary school. However, the rising number of pupils has become a big problem for the Academy as it results in lack of space as well as in a permanent shortage of trained staff.

In December 2015, our organization Dream Africa Care Foundation finally came across Future First Academy. First impressions were unbelievable: immense noise, floors covered with dirt and insects (especially cockroaches) and only two adults responsible for more than 150 children that had to spend their time hurdled in one classroom!

We decided to help immediately and started with the most urgent step: cleaning! After that, we created a curriculum as it had not been possible for the two teachers to hold regular lessons. Since then, volunteer have taken up teaching and also engage themselves in taking care of the younger children.
As many volunteer workers only stay for a couple of weeks and cannot replace trained teachers, their teaching efforts can only be seen as temporary. In addition to this, many children do not speak English and the volunteer workers are unable to address them in their mother tongue. Moreover, the lack of space still persists as a problem and cannot be solved without additional financial help.

As a result, our goal is to enlarge the school by building an additional classroom. Furthermore, we would like to employ a local teacher in order to improve the quality of teaching and realize a regular school life for the children.
