The “Biblioteca Comunitária Caranguejo Tabaiares” is a social organization created in 2005 and located in one of the poorest Favela of Recife in Brazil. Thanks to the help of volunteers, the organization has developed various activities with the children of the community such as reading, artistic creations, theater, cooking, etc. The goal is not only to entertain the children, but also to teach them environmental awareness, civility and open-minded considerations about the others.
The Project has a close relationship with France due to the partnership between Recife and the French city Nantes, and particularly with the partner Association “Nantes lit dans La rue” (http://www.nanteslitdanslarue.fr). That is why the Project includes French classes and correspondences between the Brazilian children of the community and the French ones of “Nantes lit dans la rue”. Indeed studying French is a way to open their mind to the world and to give them the motivation to pursue higher education.
However, today the “Biblioteca Comunitária” has to cope with a lack of space to enable the activities to go on. The owner of the house, where the “Biblioteca Comunitária” is developing activities, is about to break the lease at the end of June. Our goal is to finish the construction of a new library before the deadline in order to offer more convenience for the children in a peaceful atmosphere (here attached the construction plans). Today the construction is bogged down due to a lack of financial resources. It is urgent to help the organization to buy necessary materials to finish the construction (here attached the list of necessary material).
