About this project
On April 16th, 2016, a devastating earthquake struck a vast area of Ecuador. According to official reports, at least 659 people lost their lives and 40 are still missing. Over 27,000 people were injured, some of them seriously, and 9,438 buildings were destroyed. An aftershock on May 19th killed one person and injured 85 more.
As such, it was Ecuador's most disastrous earthquake since 1979.
Since the earthquake, the disaster area lacks medicine, medical equipment, and constuction materials, especially the secluded small towns near the coast which received support long after the fact.
Also in the longterm, Ecuador will face many challenges.
Who are we?
We are a small group of former exchange students from all over the world who were lucky enough to immerse ourselves into Ecuadorian culture for a year.
We attended Ecuadorian high schools, made friends, and became members of Ecuadorian families.
We feel a duty to Ecuador.
We feel this duty not only because we feel connected to our Ecuadorian family and friends and the Ecuadorian people as a whole, but especially because our exchange equipped us with the skills to help from across borders:
Via the internet, all former exchange students are excellently connected. We are familiar with both the disaster area and the Spanish language.
Our host families and friends inform us about the current situation in the whole disaster area daily.
We cooperate with representatives of our exchange organisation, Rotary International – in Ecuador and worldwide.
We know your donation will help.
Where does your donation go?
Your donation will be transferred directly from Rotaract Förderverein Deutschland to Rotaract Club Latacunga in Ecuador. Rotaract is the youth organisation of our exchange organisation Rotary International. The organisation provides humanitarian aid at many different fronts, in accordance with the Millenium Developement Goals of the United Nations.
In Latacunga, a young, enthusiastic team is coordinating the distribution of the relief and construction material funded by your donations. So far, the Rotaract Club has sent water, groceries, medicine, and even a mobile doctor's office to the disaster area.
Help the Rotaract Club Latacunga continue their work!
The people of Ecuador thank you!
