#BIKEYGEES e.V. provides free bicycle training for (migrant) girls and women. In addition to practical training we also provide road safety instruction in multiple languages, as well as basic bike repair and maintenance skills.
Why?
Every woman should know how to ride a bike. And should be allowed.
Cycling means hitting the road in a cheap and environmentally friendly way. Bikes provide exercise, a means of exploring one’s surroundings and most importantly freedom and independence.
Not every woman has had the opportunity to learn, and that is where we come in. Our training enables instant and permanent improvements to the quality of life of our participants.
How?
Our lessons take place in a safe environment. Our helpers support the participants from the first time their feet touch the pedals and are there every step of the way to explain, hold them steady and give them a push when needed. Usually a good deal of laughter is required! We endeavour to supply every woman who has learned both practical cycling skills and the rules of the road with their very own bike and accessories.
Who can participate?
Our training days take place regularly and are free. All women over 16 are welcome, regardless of whether they are long term residents or new arrivals to Berlin, irrespective of origin, age or religion.
Who are we?
#BIKEYGEES e.V. started in September 2015 as a small empowerment project. The first training took place with some friends in a supermarket parking lot. From the beginning, demand has been very high. We tought more than 2.000 women and girls how to ride a bike. And donated 650 bike-sets.
In the time since, we have grown into a non-profit association for education and integration work and were recognised as such in May 2016.
In 2017, we received two prizes: the Hatun Sürücü Prize was awarded for our special commitment to girls and young women; and the Alliance for Democracy and Tolerance, an initiative of the Federal Agency for Civic Education, for our exemplary work.
In 2018, we won first place of Deutscher Fahrradpreis.
Why are we dependent on donations?
Bicycles, multilingual lessons, space rental - there are a lot of costs involved in putting on our training sessions! It is important to us to remain independent and be able offer our participants a safe place to learn.
Because of this, we are absolutely dependent on your donations! Thank you to all our supporters!
