The Internado, a student residence in Sorata, Bolivia makes it possible for kids who live many hours walk from the nearest high school to go beyond elementary school, with guidance and educational support. Rural children in the Sorata area have high rates of malnutrition. They also have very limited experiences other than subsistence farming. Our Internado students need supplementary experiences to enrich their lives. By operating a small bakery, our students will improve nutrition and gain baking and business management skills, producing more nutritious bread products for their own consumption and local markets. There are no wholemeal breads available in the town and there is often a shortage of bread on weekends, so this will be a service to the community as well as to the students. We have purchased an adjoining small building containing a clay oven. The oven is in good shape, but the adobe wall behind it is in need of replacement. The first step is to build a retaining wall for the bottom portion with direction by a mason. This will also give them some experience of construction. Further work will be done in July by volunteers from Europe and USA together with students and their parents.Volunteers' lives are also enriched by this experience.See www.TreasuresoftheAndes.com for more info.
