    About this project

    J. Leander from HATiKVA e.V. Bildungs- und Begegnungsstätte is responsible for this project
The Old Jewish Cemetery is not only the oldest still existing Jewish graveyard in Saxony, but also, next to Alaunpark, a green idyll in the Neustadt - a small, green lung among buildings and streets. Unfortunately all these trees are now the reason why the cemetery is closed to the public right now. During a storm a branch broke, fell on the graveyard and destroyed four gravestones. According to the classification of an expert we had to realize that this tree is damaged by mistletoes and that all the other branches can break any time. To save the gravestones under this tree has to be cut down by a special trained arborist.
This situation is not only a problem for interested visitors of the cemetery but also for the HATiKVA e.V. a non - profit organization specialised in Jewish history in Saxony. Since 25 years we work in the field of education, Jewish history, guided tours to Jewish themes and culture. Especially in the range of youth education on themes like jewish religion and antisemitism we are very successful - around 2500 students are visiting the cemetery every year. To restart this very important part of our work and to reopen the graveyard to the Dresden citizens and visitors we are thankful for every donation.
