About this project

W. Witt from WIR GESTALTEN e.V. is responsible for this project
Uzimatele means "the full life" in Swahili. This is the motto of the elementary school in Gituamba, a slum in Nairobi. For 7 years 250 children can go to school here, who were previously denied access to education because the next school is many kilometers away. A lot of families can't afford long school ways. Consequently, a lot of children do not go to school. Therefore, a lot of private schools like Uzimatele Educational Centre exist. The greatest challenge for private schools which do not get any support from the government is the financing of those schools. The goal of Uzimatele: becoming sustainable!

How can this be achieved?
At the moment, the school finances itself through school fees and donations. Only a few families can afford the whole amount of school fees. The consequence is a financial gap that threatens the teacher's payment and consequencly the education for our children. In order to guarantee the continuity and quality of the education, we still need support to pay the teachers fairly and to train them.

With a lot of donations in the last months we were able to buy new school books, sports materials, learning and handicraft material and to renovate the classrooms as well as new furniture such as chairs and tables. Moreover, the school still needs the support to go on with the process of professionalization because there are still more renovations needed to fulfill the governments standards.

All these measures help to raise the standard of the school. On the one hand, more children will join the Uzimatele school. On the other hand, it takes more money that ensures to pay for the teacher's salary and school materials in a sustainable way. In order to further expand our work with children and young people and to make it more sustainable, we want to buy a piece of land. Ten percent of the amount has already been donated. We look forward to receiving donations for this cause so that our work can continue to grow.

In the last years, we have already grown in small steps with the help of a lot of donators. New classrooms could be built up and the classes grew from Grade 6 to Grade 8.

Whether a small monthly donation on a regular basis, a single donation or to pass on the project to other people: every kind of support helps to reach the goal of Uzimatele: becoming sustainable.
