Children in Laos have little access to the world of literature. They lack reading material in Lao, their mother tongue. By establishing a mobile children’s library in northern Laos, we intend to promote literacy and learning.

Reading Elephant Laos (Scorri in basso per la lingua italiana) is a small grassroots project in Ban Houayxay in the northwest of Laos, dedicated to promoting reading and learning skills among children and young people. Supported by the non-profit association Books for Laos e. V. in Germany, the project is run and implemented exclusively by young Laotians.
In Laos, there is no reading tradition, hardly any bookshops or libraries. Books for children have only been published for a few years. By setting up a mobile children's library - starting from a reading house in the provincial capital - especially children in remote villages are to be reached. Many of them are given the opportunity to read a book for the first time in their lives.
The project is mainly financed by donations. Part of the logistical costs are covered by selling books and local handicraft products to tourists. About 500 EUR per month are needed for the transport to the villages.

Reading Elephant Laos è un piccolo progetto di base a Ban Houayxay, nel nord-ovest del Laos, dedicato alla promozione della lettura e dell'apprendimento tra i bambini e i giovani. Sostenuto dall'associazione no-profit Books for Laos e. V. in Germania, il progetto è gestito e realizzato esclusivamente da giovani laotiani.
In Laos non esiste una tradizione di lettura, né librerie o biblioteche. I libri per bambini vengono pubblicati solo da pochi anni. Con la creazione di una biblioteca mobile per bambini - a partire da una casa di lettura nella capitale provinciale - si vogliono raggiungere soprattutto i bambini dei villaggi più remoti. Molti di loro avranno la possibilità di leggere un libro per la prima volta nella loro vita.
Il progetto è finanziato principalmente da donazioni. Parte dei costi logistici sono coperti dalla vendita di libri e prodotti di artigianato locale ai turisti. Per il trasporto ai villaggi sono necessari circa 500 euro al mese.
