Afya - Utilizing spirulina in the fight against malnutrition in Uganda

The student-led social startup Afya aims to combat malnutrition at an early age in Uganda with the superfood Spirulina, which is extremely rich in nutrients. It contains all the essential amino acids and is incredibly rich in vital minerals, vitamins and especially proteins. It consists of about 70% protein which is more than twice as high as the protein in conventional sources such as meat (23%) or soy (36%). In addition, spirulina is very sustainable in production, requiring 200 times less land and 218 times less water compared to meat production. 

Afya is a project of Enactus, the largest global student initiative for social entrepreneurship. Our core team in Germany consists of 7 students from the University of Mannheim and is completed by the close relationship with our Ugandan partners providing us with local know-how and a close connection to the target group.

Edward, our local employee, ensures operational success in Uganda: from harvesting the algae to ensuring our high regulatory standards.

In addition to the ongoing cost of production (our employee's salary, fertilizer, etc.), another major cost is the planned trip to Uganda in April 2023. The goal of the trip is to establish a long-term cooperation with new, local partners in order to implement the distribution plan of our product.
