Anderes Sehen e.V.
A project from Anderes Sehen e.V. in Berlin, Germany

About this project

S. Zimmermann from Anderes Sehen e.V. is responsible for this project
Anderes Sehen e.V. is an initiative that is committed to sustainably improving the chances of blind children to lead a self-determined life. As a finalist for the German Commitment Award and recognized as a "Landmark in the Land of Ideas", we have made a name for ourselves in Germany.

Our association is the first organization in Germany to campaign for the integration and inclusion of blind children from an early age - precisely where the gap in equal opportunities between blind and sighted children is widest.

We were pioneers in several areas:
- We were the first initiative in Germany to provide blind children with free canes from their very first attempts at walking, instead of only when they started school.
- We were the first to introduce the "Klicksonar" echolocation method for orientation.
- We also published the first real books for blind children in Germany and developed special materials for writing and reading exercises for pre-school children.

Our work broke new ground in 2011, because until our involvement, blind children in Germany only received educational and orientation aids at school age. This often led to poorer mental, physical and emotional development compared to their sighted peers.

By raising the awareness of educators and caregivers, we create the basis for better minimizing existing disadvantages. With the help of the long cane and click sonar technology (human echolocation), we encourage courage, the urge to move and independence. This means that these previous deficits from early childhood no longer need to be compensated for later. This is not only a benefit for the children themselves, but also for society, which benefits from self-determined, independent members. Health insurance companies and society also save money through lower follow-up costs. And above all: blind people are better integrated into society through our work, real inclusion becomes possible.

Our projects have attracted a great deal of attention* and contributed significantly to change. Before our initiative began in 2011, blind children under the age of 6 were mostly overlooked or neglected in Germany - both by the education system and by existing associations for the blind. Underachievement, exclusion, special schools and a life determined by others were the rule rather than the exception.

Through our work, we are breaking with these abuses and have already taken many important steps towards a better future for blind children.
