With over 1.3 billion people, more than 100 languages and enormous ethnic and religious diversity, India is a country of superlatives. In the state of Odisha, where we started our programme in 2017, over 30% of the inhabitants live below the poverty line. By the end of 2022, we could provide over 75,000 people with much-needed glasses through nearly 5,000 eye camps and more than 230,000 eye tests.

Care Netram - our Indian partner organisation
Care Netram trains young people to become GoodVisionTechnicians (GVTs). The GVTs learn in a short time how to safely perform eye tests and fit glasses. In small teams, they travel from village to village, informing people about good vision and carrying the urgently needed glasses with them. In hot summers, the camps are simply moved to the evening hours as "night camps". More than 50 percent of our team are women.

Help for people with cataracts
Patients often come to us with cataracts - almost or completely blind. They cannot be helped with glasses. We therefore organise the transport of the patients to a partner hospital where they are operated on free of charge. Almost 3,000 people have already received an operation in this way by the end of 2022.
