EinDollarBrille e.V. in Brazil
As the most populous country in South America, Brazil faces many problems. There is no ophthalmologist in about 70% of Brazilian cities. However, normal eye tests are compulsory as part of a full ophthalmological examination in the presence of ophthalmological staff. Considering this, it becomes clear that it is almost hopeless for people with low vision to get an appointment for an eye examination, a vision test or glasses. By the end of 2022, EinDollarBrille e.V., under the project name Renovatio, has been able to provide over 85,000 of them with glasses and carry out over 300,000 eye tests.
Many paths to good vision
In order to reach the people in the cities, Renovatio cooperates with schools, companies or hospitals, for example, and provides optical and ophthalmological personnel. A great help is a mobile eye clinic, which is housed in an extendable truck. Renovatio thus has the most modern mobile eye clinic in the country, where up to 1,000 people can be examined in one day. After around 62,000 medical examinations and eye tests in this truck, almost 15,000 people could receive glasses by the end of 2022.
Help in the Amazon
The teams also travel by plane and boat, especially when they go to rural regions or the Amazon. Renovatio regularly cooperates with SESAI, the Brazilian Special Secretariat for the Health of Indigenous Ethnic Groups. For people living in remote indigenous areas, going to the eye doctor is usually too far and too expensive.
